The new kid is not me just that this kid learning something new and is all excited.
So today I learned about this new software for research called ” R”. This is the first time I heard about the software which just shows my ignorance about the worldly affairs of research. Its seems like R is the new rage in town if you are in to research and researchers. As far as I remember in our times ( 15 years back) SPSS was the standard fare and was an expensive thing. Only few licenses per college. Seems R completely changed the game because its open source and FREE. Read more http://cran.r-project.org.
So I went ahead and installed the software on my Mac Book. Installing R on my Mac book I got into a little bit of problem. I got this error code which was like “failed” 5 times over with a little bit of Darwin. Talk about survival of the fittest in a course designed for high IQ.
1.Setting LC_CTYPE failed, using “C”
2: Setting LC_COLLATE failed, using “C”
3: Setting LC_TIME failed, using “C”
4: Setting LC_MESSAGES failed, using “C”
5: Setting LC_PAPER failed, using “C”
[R.app GUI 1.50 (6126) x86_64-apple-darwin9.8.0]
I didn’t panic to grab a new windows machine. I simply googled the error and got this.
- Open Terminal : In Mac its found under applications/utilities
- Write or paste in:
defaults write org.R-project.R force.LANG en_US.UTF-8
- Close Terminal, Close R
- Start R
And it works.
The other learning which was more profound was about Genocide. If you watch this movie called ” Fury” or any World War 2 movie or read about Anne Frank or Viktor Frankl you can easily understand about genocide.-Lots of people killed immediately and on purpose. But what when millions to die of poverty, hunger, disease, not immediately but over some time. Is that not genocide?
So what is the role of the state if not to save these lives. Is it not the purpose of the state like India to take care of its poor and vulnerable. For me war inflicted genocide and poverty based genocide are just the same. May be the world need new pair of eyes and then something will happen.
Two learnings, not a bad day.
