So this movie is about dreams but not just average dreams that you and me dream of but special ones… dreaming in other’s dreams, co-dreaming, dream with in a dream etc etc.. Basically It’s a “Dream Onion”- layers of dream in a dream like the layers of onion peeling away. And it is bloody confusing . I have already watched it twice and I’m still to get my head around the movie. But that is an indication of my language skills and my ability to grasp complexity of this level.
But I can’t help making connections to something that I read in a book written by Osho. In the book Osho explains that as we die it’s an end of one dream and we wake up in another one and this cycle goes on and on and on.
Coming back to the movie.. Cobb ( De-Caprio) is trained to steal things from your mind when you are asleep through your dream… weird and now he has to do the impossible… he has to plan a thing ( an idea) in your mind … again through your dream.. doubly weird. And to make it more confusing… people are trained to guard against extraction ( stealing) and inception and they have lots of people with guns and grenades etc etc in their dreams to this job or are they just visualising it… every one has his defensive mechanisms…
I had some interesting moments with the film. One was when De Caprio is answering the question about altering the physics of the the ways things happen in a dream. I’m sure you must have come across dreams where you can do impossible things like jumping off cliff, bouncing, becoming a plane etc etc.. I have done all of that in my dreams….
The movie also has some really mushy mushy stuff .. sample this….You’re waiting for a train, a train that will take you far away. You know where you hope this train will take you, but you can’t be sure. But it doesn’t matter – because we’ll be together.
Or some heavier stuff.. She locked away a secret, deep inside herself, something she once knew to be true… but chose to forget.
All in all a truly remarkable movie even if you will end up putting a lot of effort in understanding the movie then enjoying it. But I promise it would be like George Orwell’s ” 1984″. Heavy, difficult to understand but when you get it .. you get the whole picture and more….
So enjoy the movie.. and till you get to see it sample this….
De caprio : Well dreams, they feel real while we’re in them, right? It’s only when we wake up that we realize how things are actually strange. Let me ask you a question, you, you never really remember the beginning of a dream do you? You always wind up right in the middle of what’s going on.
I could not agree more…
